We did a lot of research, and with modern science on our side, we decided against the use of mineral filters.
For the most part, mineral or inorganic filters have the same mode of operation as organic filters, namely absorption. The mirror story contributes very little to what really makes mineral filters work.
The production of the mineral filters, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, is a chemical process that has relatively little to do with nature. Furthermore, mineral filters are not the most environmentally friendly UV filters. Zinc oxide, for example, is listed in the list of hazardous substances as toxic to the aquatic environment. Our organic filters simply perform much better.
A practical reason also plays into the decision: Mineral filters look white on your skin, and when they don't leave white marks, nanoparticles must be involved. We consider that to be a health hazard.
But we want you to feel like a million bucks when you use eco elio.
This is an issue close to our hearts: almost all commercially available sunscreens still contain microplastics in liquid form, for example acrylates, polymers and filters with questionable environmental credentials.
Most of our cream (86%) is biodegradable - that's a very good value. The remaining 14% are the UV filters, which we have worked hard to make EcoSun Pass Award to receive.
EcoSun Pass® is an internationally recognized rating system for measuring the environmental impact of UV filters. Among other things, poor degradability, coral poisoning or the potential for hormonal effects are harshly penalized.
We are one of the few sunscreens in the world that can achieve the certificate and have the most environmentally friendly solution of UV filters available today.
For sure.
We stand for being as sustainable as possible. Unfortunately, "vegan" does not always mean reducing CO2. Currently, we can't find a vegan way that would be as environmentally friendly as our current formulation. That's why we use beeswax in our formulation, which, as the name implies, comes from bees. The bees are not harmed by this, but the product is therefore not completely vegan.
Plastic is actually much better than its reputation. The much bigger problem is that plastic, unlike glass or metal, is not usually seen as a reusable material. Plastic is a cheap, durable, robust and very versatile material, but we still don't give it the respect it deserves.
That's why we designed the eco elio system to reuse most of the Daily Dose Kit packaging: the dispenser, the pump and the Let's Go bottle.
All packaging is made in such a way that it is ideal for recycling.
You can read more about our Lifecycle Analysis experience. This will give you a good impression of the principles underlying our system and what we want to achieve with it.
We understand that you don't want to buy a pig in a poke and that our promise that eco elio is the best sunscreen for you is not enough. However, shipping small samples contradicts our idea of leaving the smallest possible carbon footprint. The ratio of packaging to cream is out of all proportion with the so-called minis! If you want to get to know us, feel free to ask your dermatologist at the practice or hospital. They should have a dispenser for you to try out, or they can definitely order one.
Coconut oil, sesame seeds, olive oil? Please don't go there!
Yes, absolutely. We use only the best ingredients. Our cream is non-comedogenic. Thus, it does not clog pores and worsen the skin condition, and its moisturizing properties are loved by all skin types.
The great thing about eco elio is that the cream is as light and comfortable as the best face cream, yet cheap enough to use all over the body.

Niacinamide, Nicotinamide or Vitamin B3 is an active ingredient with a proven track record and a very good safety profile. In the right concentration, it has an amazing effect on the skin: it has a hydrating effect, protects the skin's barrier function and improves its structure and elasticity to boot. Recently, it has even been scientifically proven that niacinamide is a perfect energy supplier for the cells. After sun exposure, the body's own protective systems are thus supported.
Yes, it is also suitable for sensitive skin and for children over 2 years. We do not use any fragrances and questionable ingredients. Our products are designed for all skin types and especially for sensitive and delicate skin. All our products are developed with dermatologists and thoroughly dermatologically tested. In July 2022 we have added a study with 150 allergy sufferers and are tested and recommended by the German Allergy and Asthma Association.
Yes. And the dermatological guideline recommends that rosacea sufferers be sure to apply a daily sunscreen, because sun rays damage the skin's natural immune defenses - which could cause rosacea to worsen. The ideal sunscreen for rosacea can be recognized by the following characteristics:
● High sun protection factor - SPF 50
● Lightweight and skin-friendly texture
● Proven skin-soothing, anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory effects - that's Niacinamide
● No irritating additives and fragrances
Yes, because eco elio is non-comedogenic. This means that the sunscreen contains no ingredients that can clog pores. This prevents the appearance of bothersome blackheads (comedones) or pimples.
In addition, the active ingredient niacinamide has an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, moisturizing and cleansing effect. Inflamed pimples can thus heal quickly, while the formation of new blackheads is prevented.
Ja, du kannst eco elio auch benutzen, wenn du zu unreiner Haut neigst.
Firstly, blemished skin usually manifests itself in the form of pimples and blackheads, also known as comedones in technical jargon. The same rules apply to blemished skin as to acne-prone skin: use non-comedogenic sunscreen. eco elio contains no ingredients that can clog pores. Similarly, it is recommended to choose a sunscreen with a light texture, suitable for sensitive skin. Heavy, rich formulas should not be used as a sunscreen on the face.
In addition, niacinamide helps with blemished skin due to its antibacterial and cleansing effect.
In nature, octocrylene has been detected in the tissues of corals and mussels, where it affects the metabolism of living organisms. For humans, octocrylene is suspected of being able to alter the hormone system. Studies suggest that such interference with hormones impairs the development of the reproductive organs - and thus also reproductive ability.
Sun allergy is difficult to generalize. Is it a true allergy or phototoxicity, sun allergy, Mallorca acne or polymorphous light dermatosis?
Mostly UVA rays are the culprits, alone or in combination with other irritating substances. Since we have attached importance to a high proportion of UV-A filters in the development and use neither perfume nor dyes or other unnecessary additives, the formulation works well for allergy sufferers.
In addition, we had a test carried out on 150 allergy sufferers in cooperation with the German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB).
We had no negative results and are therefore also recommended by the DAAB.
Fragrances are the second most common triggers of contact allergy. What is an "olfactory" pleasure and often a selling point for some, tends to carry the risk of unpleasant and recurring skin irritations. Mixing unhealthy muck into our formulation for a "vacation" scent goes against our definition of PURE. We therefore refrain from using any fragrance and have tried to make our product as pleasant as possible.
Almost nothing. Not like an outdoor pool, not like roses. It is very close to "odorless" and in any case the opposite of "intrusive".
No. The fact that the cream is incredibly pleasant on the skin is a cornerstone of our idea: for you to use enough sunscreen, the cream must be particularly pleasant on the skin and also on the face. One of the ways we create the pleasant texture is by using a small amount of oil in our formulation. This makes it light, easy to spread and reduces stickiness. Our dermatological partners describe the stickiness as: "hardly at all".
The eco elio sunscreen has 5 state-of-the-art UV filters that protect against the entire relevant spectrum of UV radiation. It has broad spectrum protection with a high UVA content. The sun protection factor is high, at 50. UVA protection is higher than required, at 19.
Honestly, that's all you need. Whether you're an adult, a child or someone with sensitive skin. A really good, non-comedogenic sunscreen is a good sunscreen. You don't need an extra cream for your left earlobe and another for your right big toe. It's also totally impractical and complicated to have many different sunscreens on hand when you really need them.
After all, what good is a sunscreen if you don't apply it?
The great thing about eco elio is that it's as light and comfortable as the best face cream, yet cheap enough to use all over the body. After all, what good is the best sunscreen if no one wears it?
Frankly, we think the term "waterproof" is window dressing. The standardized test (ISO 18861:2020) consists of applying the cream, going into a whirlpool for 20 minutes, then taking a break for 15 minutes and going into the whirlpool again for 20 minutes. Then the sun protection factor is measured. If the cream retains more than 50% of the specified sun protection factor, it can be called waterproof.
In doing so, we see a number of problems:
It gives a false sense of security: 50% less protective performance is quite a lot. The "waterproof" rating also doesn't protect you from the towel you use to rub yourself down after swimming.
You must always reapply cream after bathing or heavy sweating.
Short answer: Regularly reapply cream.
Long answer: It depends!
How long you can stay in the sun depends on your skin type, UV intensity and SPF of the cream. But also season, time, place, etc.,
influence the protection.
Let's take skin type 1, the most sensitive of all, characterized by very fair skin, light blond or reddish hair, freckles. Here, the skin starts to turn red after only 5-10 minutes of exposure to the sun. If you use eco elio in the right amount, you can stay in the sun for a whole 250 - 500 minutes without burning because of the SPF 50. In other words, in a perfect world, eco elio gives you about 6 hours of protection in a day.
Another major factor in calculating protection time is that you're alive: You walk around, go swimming, accidentally wipe the cream off again because you're sweating.
So, because the UV protection may have worn off, you should reapply every 2-4 hours.
We could now say that this is our "signature feature", but in fact the yellowish colour is due to the UV filters. Don't worry: you won't see any of it on your skin. Apart from that, the colour directly puts you in a good mood, don't you think?
Not if you let it absorb into your skin first. This is true for any sunscreen. The spots will only appear if the sunscreen hasn't been properly absorbed.
You can find us to try out in dermatologists' offices and in hospitals. At the moment, you can buy us primarily in our online store and on online platforms such as Amazon. We are also represented in cosmetic institutes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Our sunscreen has a shelf life of 12 months after opening. If you still have some left a year after opening, it is best to simply dispose of the formulation in the residual waste and the packaging in the yellow bag.
The best sunscreen for kids is the one they actually apply without resistance. And that's eco elio: with a light texture that leaves no white streaks, it's honestly the first time kids have applied sunscreen without complaining. It's approved for children ages 2 and up - younger children, with their sensitive skin, shouldn't be in direct sunlight for extended periods of time anyway.
Actually, you should not have small children in the sun. Their skin is very sensitive to the sun's rays and should be protected by shade and clothes. If it can not be avoided, eco elio is suitable from 2 years.
Sure! But: the taut skin over your baby bump is now only a third as resistant as usual against the sun and more sensitive to sunburn. Therefore: use cream with a high sun protection factor or even better: put a cloth over your baby bump. We are approved in the EU for all people over 2 years.
You can use sunscreen for kids all your life! We don't even differentiate between sunscreens for adults and children - that's more marketing than anything else. We just have one sunscreen that is good for everyone. Good for sensitive skin, good for kids and parents and grandparents, and good for face and body. Done!
Very clear recommendation: 20 minutes before you go into the sun. The eco elio filters must be in contact with the skin for a while before they take effect. In addition, it is much more pleasant to put on clothes when the cream is already wonderfully absorbed and so there are also no yellow spots.
When swimming or sweating, you should regularly reapply the cream. If the cream is not wiped off, then it is enough to reapply every 4 hours.
If you are of average height and stature and dressed only in a bikini or swim trunks, you need about 34 ml to apply cream from head to toe. For the dosage with the Daily Dose Kit this means concretely:
Every day you wear a long-sleeved top and long pants ...
- Face, neck, back of the hand - 2 pumps for adults and children.
On a summer day when you're in shorts and a T-shirt ...
- In addition to the amount of "Every day" plus
- Forearms and lower legs - 4 pumps for adults and 2 for children.
For an outdoor pool day when you're wearing swimwear ...
- In addition to the above suggestions, plus
- Upper arms, trunk, thighs and feet - 11 pumps for adults and 6 for children.
An old dermatological rule of thumb is: first things first. So if you should apply a medication, this comes first, then comes the sunscreen and then the make-up.
Yes. Don't get us wrong - the fact that your day cream contains UV filters is great. But unfortunately, it's not enough to really protect you properly. Rarely do day creams have an SPF of over 30. In addition, UVA is an important protection factor. Does your day cream have a high UVA protection? We have placed emphasis on high UVA protection and thus effectively prevent skin ageing.
Yes - because this is the normal reaction of the skin exposed to the sun. But as our sunscreen has SPF 50, the body's reaction to sun exposure - that is, turning brown - will be less severe.
It's just that browning is not good at all. It is a sign of skin damage and thus not something to strive for.
Sun sprays, although convenient, are rather unsuitable especially for children due to the risk of inhalation. Also, one of the main reasons for sunburns is not applying the right amount. With sun sprays, you have no way of knowing how much UV filter got on your skin. So rather use a sunscreen.
The sun shines even in winter. Due to the low temperatures, we are often not aware of this. Especially the UVA radiation does not decrease dramatically in winter in our latitudes and is therefore still dangerous. And in the snow, you remember it reflects the UV radiation up to 80%. When skiing, the UV exposure increases by 10% with 1,000m above sea level.
No. It is generally unlikely that you will develop a vitamin D deficiency in Germany in the summer. At least, there is no solid scientific evidence for it.
If you are already vitamin D deficient for other reasons, sunscreen won't make a difference - it won't change the deficiency. If you are experiencing symptoms of vitamin D deficiency (fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, aches and pains, cramps, or mood swings) or you are at increased risk for such a deficiency (darker skin, older than 50), you should have your vitamin D level measured - it's an important issue.
Incidentally, from a scientific point of view, UV radiation is much more dangerous than the problems caused by vitamin D deficiency.
Generally, the jar symbol on cosmetic products indicates their shelf life. Many commercially available sun creams use the UV filter octocrylene. According to a study, these can decompose into carcinogenic substances after a longer period of time. We do not use octocrylene or homosalates because of their hormonal effects.
UV radiation is a part of the sun's rays. You can't see UV radiation, but your skin can feel it. The so-called UV light has shorter wavelengths than the light visible to us.
Here's a quick mnemonic for you:
UVB - B is for burning.
UVA - A for ageing.
UVB radiation is high in energy, but penetrates only the upper layers of the skin - these rays cause sunburn. It is responsible for melanoma (black skin cancer). The SPF indicates the level of UVB protection (for example, 30 or 50).
UVA radiation is the longer-wave part of UV radiation. It is not as energetic as UVB radiation, but penetrates deeper into the skin. These rays cause skin ageing and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). UVA protection is not labelled separately on your SPF. If the word 'UVA' is indicated in a circle on the packaging, the protection must be at least 1/3 of the SPF. Our eco elio sunscreen exceeds this specification with 19.
There is a magic formula that explains the sun protection factor:
Self-protection time x SPF = New protection time
The self-protection time is defined by your skin type and the UV index.
For example, if you have skin type 1 and the UV index is medium, you can last 10 minutes in the sun without sunscreen until your skin burns.
With an SPF 50, you can now multiply these 10 minutes and get 500 minutes of sun in medium UV radiation.
If the dispenser falls down during normal household use, that's no big deal. Of course, it would be better if it didn't happen :) This is also the main reason why we decided against a glass container. The dispenser is robust and designed for long-lasting use.
The following applies to the Let's Go Bottle: We tested the material used at home in the dishwasher and designed the bottle to be as easy to clean as possible - we enlarged the opening so that more water can get in during washing. Matthias has put it in the machine about 100 times, and nothing is noticeable yet. What surprised us is that it's actually a normal material that you could use at home for all sorts of things - it's easily reusable, but I guess we as a society are still resisting that. #spoiledbyplastic #respectplastic
Whenever you replace the refill pack, you should also clean the pump - here's how:
Clean the pump under warm running water - rub off any residue.
Pump warm water through the pump to rinse out the remaining cream.
Pull the tube off the pump and unscrew the pump. The pump consists of an upper and a lower part. There is a spring in the lower part. The screw cap of the pump rests on the lower part.
Put all 5 pieces in the cutlery basket and clean them with your dishes in the dishwasher at a minimum of 60 degrees.
Reinsert the spring into the lower part with the larger diameter facing down. Insert the cover and screw the pump parts together.
Afterwards, rinse clean water through the pump again. Done!
The Let's Go Bottle should be cleaned before each refill.
Unscrew the cap of the empty bottle.
Place the bottle upside down with the glasses and place the opened lid in the cutlery compartment of the dishwasher and run it through a normal rinse cycle at a minimum of 60 degrees with your dishes.
Rinse the bottle and the lid again with clean water.
Leave the bottle upside down until it is completely dry.
